Having been in the equipment hire business one way or the other for over 30 years, I had always been of the old school view that; “passive is best”…. Until recently ! ! !   

      

     

Since becoming a leading member of the Powerhouse Hire team, I have seen rep after rep bringing in many types of active (amplified) speakers. I have to be honest and say that nothing has made me form the view that they are better than passive. Many will not accept an input level that is more than low, so as soon as you increase the gain at the mixer or mixing desk to a usable level they distort, meaning having to increase the individual active speaker level to accommodate this inadequacy. Extremely frustrating during a set or event.
          

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  

When introduced to Mackie active, I was to say the least, reluctant. “I’ve heard it all before” I said. “Just listen to the Mackie SRM 450” they insisted. In the next few minutes, twenty or so years of personal opinion was shattered. I couldn’t believe how easy these speaker cabinets were to use. No distortion at any setting, powerful, clear and an incredible frequency range.
  

 

 

 

 

I was also shown the Mackie SWA 1501 500 watt active bass cabinet. This has to be the best powered sub I have ever heard at this level. “A solid thud” is the best way I could describe it. A clean reproduction of pure bass through a very true crossover system; this is a classic.

 

 

 

At Powerhouse Hire we now have an extensive inventory of Mackie Active speaker cabinets, including the SRM 450 v2 blue12” 400 watt full range cabinet and the SWA 1501 15” 500 watt active sub, plus the all new SRM 1801 18" 500 watt active sub. So pleased have we been with Mackie Active speaker cabinets already in hire stock, that as from the begining of September 2010 we have been introducing the new Mackie SRM 450 v2 black cabinet. These will be phased in as we continue to grow our hire stock of this amazing range of powered speaker cabinets. Also recently introduced to our hire fleet is the Thump TH15A, a 200 watt active full range speaker cabinet from Mackie. This is now widely used as either a DJ monitor cabinet, or as a front of house speaker for smaller venues. We feel that this will compliment our existing Mackie stock perfectly, and I don’t think we will ever look back again and say "passive is best".
